Why treat your Spa water?

To keep the water sparkling and clear.
To protect the people that use your spa from bacteria & illness.
To protect your spa surface/equipment from corrosion & damage.

What you need to know..

You should check the capacity of your spa in litres, this should be written in your owner’s manual or specification sheet.
This will enable you to determine the proper amounts of chemicals to use.
To avoid adding unnecessary pollution to your spa water we strongly advise that you have a shower first.
Before filling your spa with a garden hose, flush away any water that may have been lying in the hose.
Always add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals.
Always add chemicals with pump on low speed only.

Why is water balance important?

Water balance affects the performance life of your equipment, the effectiveness of your sanitiser, the appearance of your water and the comfort of the bather.
Water balance comprises pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, temperature and total dissolved solids.
Please see the Spa guide enclosed in your Spa starter kit for more information on these.
Water varies from area to area.
You can contact your local Water Authority for an analysis of your tap water.
We can test a sample of your water to determine whether you have hard or soft water.
A calcium hardness reading of 200ppm is ideal.
Warm water is perfect for the growth of bacteria, algae and fungi.
Perform daily tests on your spa water to ensure the sanitiser and water balance levels are correct.

Daily Tasks

Use your test strips to check
a)Total alkalinity – keeping this stable will prevent the pH from fluctuating. Ideally maintained between 80-160 (mg/l)
b)PH – keep within the range of 7.2-7.6 for bather comfort and to enable the sanitiser to work effectively
c)Check sanitiser level to control and destroy bacteria.
You should maintain a free chlorine reading of 3-5ppm (mg/l) and a free Bromine level of 4-6 mg/lDose your spa as required to adjust the above readings. Adjusting the total alkalinity first, the pH second and then the sanitiser level.
Test your spa when the water is not circulating for accurate results.

Weekly Tasks

Rinse out your filters using a hosepipe.
Add spa clarifier, which clears cloudy water, also improving the efficiency of your filter cartridge.
Add spa no foam as necessary to remove body oils and suds.
Oxidise your spa water to restore sparkle and remove non-filterable waste such as cosmetics, perspiration etc.
Also known as ‘shocking’ the spa.
Use a non-chlorine shock treatment or ‘shimmer’.
This should be done after bathing, add an extra dose after heavy bathing e.g a party.

Monthly Tasks

Clean filters using filter cleaning solution, which will remove scale, oil & grease.
Soak in solution for 24 hrs, rinse, then allow filter to dry before use to restore efficiency.
Drain half the water from spa, clean water line with spa gel and top up with fresh water.

Other tasks

Drain & refill your spa completely as and when necessary.
We recommend every 6-8 weeks.
Every 2-3 months use a Hot Tub & Whirlpool Pipe Cleaner to remove dirt, oil and other plumbing build up.
Clean your hot tub cover with a weak solution of water and detergent and then dry.
Afterwards apply 303 Aerospace protectant which restores and maintains a like-new appearance and colour.
Apply every 3-5 weeks for maximum uv protection.
Replace filters every 2 years.

Further useful information

Most spas nowadays incorporate an Ozonator.
This device turns oxygen into ozone gas, which then kills bacteria and purifies the water.
This treatment is in addition to your sanitiser not instead of.
If in doubt, drain out!

Sanitisers – to kill bacteria and deter algae growth
Bromine available in tablet or granules.
Chlorine available in tablet or stabilised granules.

Water balance products – to protect the spa
Higher cal to increase calcium hardness of water
TA plus to increase total alkalinity level
pH plus to increase pH level
pH minus to decrease pH and total alkalinity level
Stain & scale inhibitor

Oxidisers – to destroy bather waste and clarify water
Non-chlorine shock
Shimmer

Accessories – to enhance enjoyment
Spa Clarifier to clarify spa water
Spa No-foam to get rid of unsightly foam
Filter Cleaner to clean the filters of waste
Spa Cleaner to clean waterline and surfaces
Spa Maximiser Plus to increase bather comfort
Always follow the manufacturers instructions on the back of each chemical container.
A small postal scale is ideal to measure out small quantities - it will pay for itself in no time.

How to Measure Spa & Hot Tub Filter Cartridges

Width Always start by measuring the width (diameter) of your old cartridge.
Keep in mind that measurements may vary by about 1/8" due to expansion, shrinkage, etc.
For example, if you measure as a 5" diameter, and cannot find the listing in the 5" series guide, it may actually be a 4 15/16" filter, etc.

Length Now measure the length, from outside of end cap to outside of end cap.
Once again, remember that measurements may vary from specs by about 1/8" due to expansion or shrinkage. Note: If your filter has a handle top and/or fitting on the other end do NOT include these in your length measurement.

Hole Diameter

Your filter may have a hole in one end (with a handle top or closed top), or it may have a hole in both ends.
Measure diameter(s).
This is the actual hole diameter, excluding taper, if any.
(Closed-top filters often have small pin-holes to allow trapped air to escape when installed.
Ignore pin-holes for measurement purposes). If your filter has a slotted-hole, measure the shortest way, not including the slot.
The 2 most common slotted hole sizes are: 1 7/8" (1.9") and 2 3/8".

Jacuzzi History

See more at Wardle Spas

An interesting look back at the history of the famous Jacuzzi brand name, from the 1900’s to the present day.

Jacuzzi, the most famous name in hot tubs..
Some
names are so legendary that they seem to be part of our lives. Jacuzzi, the most widely recognised name in whirlpool and hot tub hydrotheraphy, is first and foremost an illustrious family name. The Jacuzzi brothers started a tradition of innovation in the fields of aviation and agriculture, and actually gave rise to a new industry with their home hydrothraphy products.

1900’s - Seven brothers - pioneers in design and engineering.
Inventive, hard-working, and family-oriented, the Jacuzzi family came to the United States in the early 1900’s from Europe. Making their mark avaiation with the construction of the first closed-cabin monoplane, they later turned their attention to water systems and pumps in California’s orange groves. In 1925, the brothers revolutionised the agricultural industry by c
reating the first submersible pump.

1950’s - Hydraulics leads to hydrotheraphy..
When a young Jacuzzi family member was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis, the brothers, already experts in hydraulics, designed an aerating pump that could be submerged in a bathtub to provide pain-relieving hydrotherapeutic treatments. The J-300, a portable pump, became a celebrated invention of the era. With the power to transform any normal bath into a relaxing and rejuvenating hydro therapeutic spa, the J-300 hot tub started a niche market. In doing so it started Jacuzzi on the road to becoming a household
name.

1960’s - Innovative jets start an industry..
In 1968, the third -generation family member Roy Jacuzzi took the portable hydrotheraphy pump to the next level. Having worked in the family business since he was a teenager, Roy Jacuzzi created and marketed the world’s first integrated whirlpool bath, the "Roman". The key to the Roman was the incorporation of innovative theraphy jets into the sides of the tub. His patented jets produced a unique 50/50 air-to-water ratio. Jacuzzi uses this same air-to-water system today to provide a spa experience you won’t find anywhere else. With the support of family members, Roy was instrumental in creating a whole new industry. The brand Jacuzzi® became forever imprinted in our minds.

1970’s - The first hot tubs built for families..
In 1970, Jacuzzi invented larger hot tubs to accomodate groups of people. Incorporating heating and filtration systems to keep the water warm and clea, these self-contained family-size "spas" were unique. For the first time in modern history, anyone could indule in a relaxing and invigorating spa tretment with friends and family in their own homes.

1980’s - Hot tubs to fit the active lifestyle..
During the 1980’s Jacuzzi focussed on enhancing the home spa experience, introducing models that worked as hot tubs, whirlpool baths, or both. The new models incorporated soothing waterfalls and could be installed indoors or out turning the backyard into a place to relax and entertain family and friends.

1990’s - Jacuzzi hot tubs become part of the family backyard..
In the early 1990’s Roy Jacuzzi inducted into the National Kitchen & Bath Hall of Fame, recognised for his many contributions in the innovation of hydrotheraphy for home use. Jacuzzi was the first company to promote the concept that a backyard hot tub could be as "entertaining" as a
barbeque grill or lap pool. The Jacuzzi design and engineering teams responded to modern consumer trends by offering more energy saving hot tubs, in more colours, and with more optional features than ever before.

2000 - Award-winning Jacuzzi hot tubs sold word-wide..
The Jacuzzi® brand of hot tubs is manufactured by Jacuzzi Hot Tubs, the world’s largest manufacturer of acrylic spas. In addition to the first whirlpool bath patent, Jacuzzi, Inc. has over 250 worldwide patents for advancements in pump systems, jet technology, air controls and product design. This ongoing commitment to innovative product development ensures Jacuzzi’s leadership position in the industry, and sets the standard for quality and value the world over.
